We work with local partners to establish self-operated biblical Hebrew training programs.<\/span><\/p>\n There is a growing demand across the Bible translation movement for field-based training in the original languages of the Bible.\u00a0Whole Word Institute collaborates with indigenous churches and agencies to extend our Jerusalem training into regions of the world with few translations of the whole Bible. <\/span><\/strong>HELP prepares translation teams to work directly from the original languages of the Bible into their own.<\/span><\/p>\n Hybrid HELP is led by local instructors trained in Jerusalem using materials and methods developed by Whole Word Institute. It combines in-person and virtual classroom learning.<\/span><\/p>\n HELP is designed so participants can continue with other translation training or projects during the course of this Hebrew training. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Stages & Requirements<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Each potential student is required to take a qualifying preparatory course.<\/span><\/p>\n Pre-requisite for a program:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Qualified translators are sent to Jerusalem for the fast-track immersive residential training to become instructors. We recommend there be a minimum of two instructors trained in Jerusalem for every Hybrid HELP hub. Instructors’ training will take one year in Jerusalem and then one year either in Jerusalem or on the field as a mentor or assistant teacher while continuing their advanced Hebrew studies. The time to achieve an MA in Biblical Hebrew Pedagogy Instruction varies, but completion usually takes a minimum of two years.<\/span><\/p>\n Each Hybrid HELP Hub will combine an in-person group classroom setting with self-study. This greatly accelerates and enhances the learning process. Instructors from Jerusalem will teach in-person group classes, assisted by local teachers who have gone through the Jerusalem program. These local teachers continue to mentor and support students through the process of learning and ongoing study. Some courses are taught in virtual classes conducted online as a follow-up to the Hybrid courses. The duration of the in-person classes ranges from two to three weeks, depending on the type of course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n STAGES<\/b><\/p>\n HELP courses are\u00a0 designed in three stages or certificates:<\/span><\/p>\n STAGE 1:\u00a0<\/b>\u201cCertificate in Intermediate Biblical Hebrew\u201d One qualifying preparatory course plus six Biblical Hebrew courses. (Equivalent to three years of seminary Biblical Hebrew)<\/span> (7 courses)<\/span><\/i> STAGE 2: <\/b>\u201cCertificate in Biblical Hebrew Culture and Geography\u201d STAGE 3:\u00a0<\/b>\u201cCertificate in Advanced Hebrew\u201d <\/span>(6 courses)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Completion of all three stages of the Hybrid HELP local training is equivalent to the intensive Jerusalem-based School of Biblical Hebrew.<\/span><\/p>\n The minimum study for someone working on an Old Testament project should be Stage 1. Stage 2 will greatly enhance understanding of what is being translated and will aid translation teams in describing and exegeting the material in the Bible with the land of the Bible as their classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n Achievement of Stage 3 courses is intended to synthesize the training in Biblical Hebrew and to bring the student up to a level three (level Gimel) fluency, where they can begin to effectively access some commentaries that are written in Hebrew. They will have achieved a level of working within and from the Hebrew Bible itself, a minimal fluency level for translating from the Hebrew Bible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is recommended that all translation consultants and at least one person on every translation project attain the advanced Hebrew threshold or the professional level of working from the original Biblical Hebrew.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”THE FIRST STAGE: ‘CERTIFICATE IN BIBLICAL HEBREW'” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”a513e30d-7188-4b32-a7f0-2c4da53dd726″ global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The 18-credit program may be thought of as the equivalent of “three years of university or seminary Hebrew,” with the added advantage of being taught as CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) where the teaching enhances rapid internalization of the language. This sets a high introductory platform for training translators and consultants.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Certificate Outcomes:<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Successful students will build a robust foundation towards achieving a level of independently working from the source text. (Such a skill level will be attained during the third certificate stage.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Translation team members with this certificate would be able to meaningfully discuss source translation issues with other team members and consultants.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n <\/span><\/span>This first certificate provides a practical place for evaluation. Dependent upon course evaluation results, students may be recommended to proceed to further training, or they may be recommended to concentrate on other aspects of the translation task than source comprehension. This module provides a spoken biblical Hebrew environment and also an opportunity for those with a previous background in biblical Hebrew to re-lay the foundations of biblical Hebrew so that it is integrated within the oral-aural networks of the brain. Natural language processes will be sped up, as will reading skills. This module becomes the foundation for the further language development through the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n “Oral Foundations of Biblical Hebrew A” is a beginning Hebrew language course based on the book of Jonah. 50 hours of asynchronous prerequisite preparation introduce over 200 vocabulary items within a discovery picture framework. The alphabet is also discovered and practiced in parallel lessons after or during the picture introductions. After the 50 hours of asynchronous prerequisite training, synchronous online sessions are run in biblical Hebrew. The narrative of Jonah is read, with an emphasis on comprehension, authorial choices, combined with acting out dialogues, memorizing Bible passages, and participating in \u2018live\u2019 language. (Optional homework material provides glosses and explanations in English, also available in French.)<\/em> Courses taught in Hebrew but need English to set up the internet interface.<\/span><\/p>\n *\u00a0<\/span>Persons with advanced analytical knowledge of biblical Hebrew have profited from this module and recommend it despite its \u201cintroductory\u201d status.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n This course is a continuation of Course 1 and completes the book of Jonah. This course, both asynchronous and synchronous parts, integrates the syntax, morphology, and discourse structures of biblical Hebrew (text linguistics), while expanding comprehension through reading. The online synchronous sessions function in Hebrew, using an immersion approach, and includes TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Verb morphology is reviewed, both regular and weak verbs. The spoken biblical Hebrew environment enhances long-term retention and facilitates future studies in more advanced biblical Hebrew or other dialects of Hebrew. Extra stories are told in biblical Hebrew in order to illustrate and to help internalize these features. As part of the homework, written explanations about Hebrew structures are provided in English and Hebrew. Students are expected to complete the second level of Hebrew fluency (level bet) during the Jerusalem program. Successful students will be close to a level where they can independently work from the source language.
