Waiting\u00a0for\u00a0the Word<\/span><\/h1>\r\n
“…till he\u00a0appeared\u00a0and the soul\u00a0felt its worth.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/div>\r\nAfter nearly\u00a0two years, Sharon and I have finally been able to get back to\u00a0the\u00a0Institute for Biblical Languages\u00a0& Translation\u00a0Jerusalem campus, and to our home in the Galilee. While our wait to return has been much longer than we could have expected, it has led us to trust even\u00a0more in the Lord\u2019s provision and timing. At long last, we are thankful to be\u00a0in\u00a0the land again\u00a0anticipating the arrival of\u00a0new\u00a0students\u00a0who will be learning to translate the\u00a0Bible directly from Hebrew.\r\n\r\nMost of us have\u00a0had to live through\u00a0some\u00a0kind of waiting\u00a0because\u00a0of\u00a0the coronavirus. Waiting to get back to\u00a0our\u00a0homes, or\u00a0waiting to see loved ones again.\u00a0For me growing up here,\u00a0Christmas in\u00a0Jerusalem was\u00a0marked by my father singing\u00a0\u201cOh\u00a0Holy Night.\u201d\u00a0Do you remember the powerful words?\u00a0\u201cLong lay the world in sin and error pining, till he\u00a0appeared\u00a0and the soul\u00a0felt its worth.\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0And here where the story began, I\u00a0am\u00a0struck by\u00a0how much of the world\u00a0is still pining, waiting\u00a0to receive the full Word of God in their own language. Without hearing the full story\u00a0of\u00a0Scripture,\u00a0many\u00a0do not know who their Creator is, and who they are as people made in\u00a0His image, deeply\u00a0loved\u00a0and valued by their\u00a0redeemer.\r\n

Marjorie, a young woman in\u00a0Tongwa, Zambia, showed us the\u00a0great\u00a0impact\u00a0even\u00a0a single verse from the Original Testament can make in a life. Marjorie and her husband Moses live in a village where women and children are considered mere property, and\u00a0until recently, practiced human sacrifice. For many years Marjorie did not know her life held any value. But when the Word of God came to them, translated and spoken in their own language, things began to change.\u00a0Marjorie heard the story of creation, that both man and woman were created in God\u2019s image. \u201cWhen I heard that I knew that I, too, as a woman, have dignity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\n

God\u2019s Word brought transformation in other life-giving ways. Marjorie and Moses had the first Christian marriage in their village. Their love for each other, and their value and care\u00a0for\u00a0their son, set them apart, shining light in the darkness of their culture\u2019s beliefs.<\/p>\r\nOthers in the village also came to faith.\u00a0When they were asked what verse from the Bible changed them, they answered over and over,\u00a0\u201cIn the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0These words from the Original Testament revealed to them who God truly is as their\u00a0Creator, and\u00a0gave them new identities as bearers of His image.\r\n

As Advent begins and Christmas\u00a0draws\u00a0near, we enter a time of waiting to remember the\u00a0coming of\u00a0God\u2019s Son,\u00a0who\u00a0broke\u00a0the long silence and brought\u00a0light into our darkness.\u00a0For those of us who have the full Word of God in our own language, we know\u00a0our \u201csoul\u2019s worth\u201d and our\u00a0value in God\u2019s eyes, and\u00a0therefore we\u00a0anticipate\u00a0the Christmas season with\u00a0great joy.<\/span>\u00a0As you prepare your heart\u00a0for this time of waiting, I invite you to think of\u00a0those\u00a0who\u00a0speak 90% of the world\u2019s languages\u00a0who\u00a0still wait\u00a0to\u00a0know the full meaning of Christmas\u2013\u2013to\u00a0learn\u00a0of their value and dignity in God\u2019s eyes, as Marjorie did.<\/p>\r\n
